Dies from the bottom of one stalk but rest of the plant seems to survive sometimes, sometimes it just all dies. Do you know why?

Hardy hibiscus sometimes dies down to ground level but resprout in the spring. If you're losing part of the shrub, it indicates a root problem. If the soil doesn't drain quickly enough the roots can suffocate. You might want to dig the plant this spring, amend the soil with organic matter to encourage good drainage and then replant your hardy hibiscus. Best wishes with your garden!
