I have several douglas firs that were planted 2 years ago. One of them has turned reddish brown this winter. Is it dead?

Reddish needles indicate dead needles. You might want to prune or bend one of the branches to see if it is green inside or snaps in two. If it bends rather than snaps in two, the branch is still alive. If it snaps in two it's dead. Let's cross our fingers!
