when should I prune

Crepe myrtles produce flowers on the current season's growth so prune in early spring before you see flower buds forming. If you miss this opportunity you can prune it back after the flowers are spent. The new growth may develop a second flush of blooms later in the season. Best wishes with your crepe myrtle.
