As a general rule of thumb, bulbs should be planted at the end of their dormant season. For most, it's in the late fall. Dutch iris will take 10-12 weeks to bloom after planting, daffodils 12-16 weeks, and glads 14-16 weeks, so adjust your planting times to when you want the bulbs to flower by counting back the number of weeks each type will take. Plant Freeshias in late summer or early autumn for winter-spring bloom. They like sandy soil, good air circulation, and temperatures between 55F-60F degrees. Keep them out of direct sunlight and fertilize when flower buds begin to form. Iris should be planted about 4 inches deep, daffodils 4-6 inches deep, and glad corms about four times deeper than their height. Complete information about forcing bulbs is in the book 'Gardening Through The Year' by Hazel Evans, ISBN# 0-06-181257-9.
