A spur is a short (3-5") branch where the apple tree flowers and sets fruit. You can remove spurs if your tree is setting too much fruit, but most home gardeners simply leave them alone. When you are pruning, try to leave as many spurs intact as possible so you will have the largest fruit set possible.
