Bamboo is not a good thing to plant! There's a look-alike called Nandina (heavenly bamboo) that you can trim to remain narrow and upright. It is evergreen and attractive. Or, arborvitae (thuja) has an upright growth habit reaching about 20' high but remaining only about 2' wide. A third suggestion is Skyrocket Juniper. It, too, is upright and narrow. Hope one of these plants works for you!
