Lilac bushes spend the summer months developing flower buds for the following spring's floral display. If you prune them in winter, you'll prune off all the flowers for the year. Wait until after they have finished flowering this spring and then prune them back. This way the shrubs can spend the summer months developing new growth and new flower buds for the following year's flowers.
