Yours won't be an easy task, considering you don't know what jewels might be hiding beneath the soil. I'd start by pruning back the vines and pulling out the obvious weeds. After everything has sprouted this spring you can either dig, divide and replant, or simply dig out the plants you want to preserve, temporarily plant them in another bed, then completely overhaul the original bed. This way you'll be sure you're not damaging any bulbs or the roots of dormant plants. Good luck with your renovation project.
