Insect damage is typically random. What you describe sounds like bird damage. Sapsuckers, woodpeckers, etc. make long lines of holes and several visits from them can cause patterns. There's not much you can do to keep the birds from attacking your tree and in most cases the damage is unsightly but not harmful to your tree.
