I have a willow tree. On the leaves there are these oval bumps, as many as 6-8 bumps on a leaf. Whatever is hatching is eating the leaves. I see no other sign of pests except ants. I did trim the branches so that they don't hang on the ground. Could you tell me what I am dealing with and how to control them. It is a young tree (18' tall) and is doing very well in spite of these little friends. I appreciate your help.

There is one common disease (Marssonia Leaf and Twig Spot) and one insect (Giant Willow Aphid) that can cause the problem you describe. Since it's important to identify the problem prior to treating, you should take a leaf sample to your local cooperative extension office for positive diagnosis. Contact Tonie Fitzgerald at WSU Cooperative Extension, 222 N. Havana, Spokane 99202. Phone 509 533-2048. Good luck with your willow!
