is it a bad thing if i till my old plants into the ground to plant new ones

Not a bad thing at all. The old plants will decompose once you've dug or tilled them into the soil and as they decompose they will release nutrients. Plus, they will add organic matter to the soil. I till my old veggies into the soil at the end of each gardening season. It's just like tilling in compost or other organic matter. It's good for the soil!
