Leyland cypress is cold hardy so what you describe is probably due to water stress or lack of nutrition. Be sure you water your trees deeply all summer and fall, and feed them each spring to help them grow strong and healthy. Any winter damage can be pruned away. Sometimes Leyland cypresses are sheared to keep them thick and dense. You might try shearing them each spring to encourage healthy new growth. Best wishes with your Leyland cypresses!
