I just moved into a new home 0 and there is a Bird of Paradise by the pool that is very over grown (15ft tall) and the leafs are dead - it looks like heck. Do I trim it back and get rid of the old dead leafs or do I just cut it down ?

You can cut the bird of paradise nearly to ground level and it should resprout later this spring. If it is 15 feet tall it has an extensive root system and lots of stored energy so it should recover quickly. If that seems too drastic for you, simply cut down the stems to remove the dead leaves. Either way, the area should look a lot more attractive! Best wishes with your landscape!
