Some plants have a requirement for excellent drainage or an acid pH. Without knowing which plants you are growing, I can't give specific soil preferences, but if you've already amended the native soil with compost (most top soils are a mixture of compost, garden soil and sand), then you shouldn't need to do anything else to the soil prior to planting your landscape plants. A soil amendment is simply that - organic matter to loosen it and help it drain quickly. Hope this clarifies things for you.
