Because of your summer heat and the fact that your terra cotta planter can act as an oven for plant roots, you'll want something that is heat and drought tolerant. Trailing lantana comes to mind, as does Gazania rigens cv. 'Yellow Trailing', Other sturdy plants you might consider include trailing verbena, salvia, or trailing rosemary. Enjoy your garden!
