|Blackberry bushes develop flowers and fruit on the new growth of the season. You can cut the canes down by about a third and still have lots of new growth and lots of fruit this summer. If the planting is very overgrown, remove some of the canes completely. The roots will send out new canes in the early summer. I'd prune in early spring, just as new growth begins.
