I live in Augusta,MO which is close to St Louis, MO. We built a new house and need to start a new lawn. When is the best time for us to put grass seed down? Is there a particular brand or type of grass seed that does better in our area?

Choosing a turfgrass type in your growing region can be a real challenge! Because of your hot summer weather, warm season grasses such as bermuda are recommended, but these grasses brown out during your cold winters. If you want a reasonably green lawn through most of the year you'll want to overseed your bermuda with a cool season grass such as perennial rye. If it isn't important to you that your grass browns out a certain times of the year, You can plant tall fescue or Kentucky bluegrass. Whichever you decide to plant, you can seed your lawn this spring when the soil warms to about 40F. When trees are leafing out and weeds are beginning to pop up, the soil is warm enough to plant grass seeds. Enjoy your new home and landscape!
