Acer palmatum 'Atropurpureum' often develops multiple trunks but if you want to train your tree to a single trunk, choose the most upright and sturdy trunk and simply prune away the rest of them, right at ground level. Lower branches can be removed flush with the trunk and any out of place branches can be removed by cutting back to their place of origin. Dormant season or early spring pruning, just as new leaves emerge is best for your maple. If you prune too late in the season the tree will respond with lots of rank growth. If this happens, wait until next January to prune and reshape your tree.
