For the past few years liriope has sprung up in my backyard and is spreading everywhere. Short of pulling it up (which I've been doing) is there some other way to get rid of it?

Sounds as though you have the running type of liriope rather than the clumping type. This is difficult to control without digging a trench around your planting and digging up all the unwanted plants. You could spot treat with a vegetation killer but since it's a contact herbicide it can kill other plants as well, so apply it carefully. I paint it on with a small brush so overspray won't cause problems with my other plants. Hope this works for you as well.
