I just moved into a house and need to plan my backyard, including space for kids swingset, a veggie garden and flower gardens. The house already has a few trees in the back, is fenced in, has grass and a concrete pation . Where can I see designs and play around with designs myself, to scale?

I'm not aware of any free software, but 3D Garden Composer DVD/CD runs about $40 and has an extensive database of plants. You can draw the shape and search the database by plant size and flower color, then move things around to suit yourself. It's a fun program and useful for beginning designers. Enjoy!
