How do I know whether I
need to buy more than one
fruit tree variety to
assure successful pollination?

For the most part, peach and nectarine trees are self-pollinating but not many other fruit trees are. Even those that are labeled self-pollinating will produce heavier crops if a second, different variety of the same tree is planted in the landscape. I'd plan on making room for two trees rather than just one. Just check the plant tags. If a pollinator is required, it will say so. Good luck with your new trees.
