A friend asked me if he could plant new centipede grass seed on a lawn that had a preemergent fertlizer to prevent crabgrass if he dug out the grass and replaced with new soil. He put down the preemerge fert two weeks ago, and he wants to plant the new seeds in about a month or so. Is that ok? I didnt know but I told him I would ask the pros! He wants to take up about a 10x10 area. thank you! |
A pre emergent works by stopping seeds from germinating, whether the seeds are weed seeds or grass seeds. Most pre emergents weather away in 3-4 weeks so if your friend waits another month to seed his lawn, the grass seeds should not be affected by the pre emergent. Just to make sure, though, check the product label for the recommended waiting time before overseeding. If he wants to dig out and replace the current lawn, most of the fertilizer and pre emergent will be dug up, as well, so it shouldn't be an issue. I hope this clarifies things for you. Best wishes with the project! |
