|I am planning some raised vegetable gardens, is it necessary to remove the sod prior to filling the beds with a 50/50 mix of soil and compost?

|The sod (roots and stolons) can act like a barrier to water if you don't break it up or slice through it before adding your topsoil. You won't have to remove the sod - it will eventually decompose, but I'd at least cut through it with a shovel before adding the topsoil. Best wishes with your new garden.
