what can i do now(mid march in ct.) to insure a good start for my lawn. Sun to partial shade. thank you

You can apply a pre-emergent herbicide to help keep weed seeds from germinating. I use the corn gluten based product called CONCERN Weed Prevention, but there are fertilizer/weed killing blends available as well. If you use Concern you can feed your lawn in April; if you use a combination product you can apply it in late March/early April before weeds begin to sprout. Best wishes with your lawn.
