A hardy cactus occasionally found in gardens is the prickly pear (Opuntia) which is hardy to zone 4. It grows fairly low to the ground and has hairy spines (ouch). It requires full sun and a well-drained spot and makes lovely yellow flowers in early summer. Be sure to plant it in a spot where children, pets and absent minded gardeners will not accidently come in contact with it.
