I recently installed a concrete patio in the backyard. Between the edge of the patio and the fence there is gap which is 14 in. wide and about 10 in deep. I would love to add some life to the back yard in that gap and in the 3 tree rings in the patio was built around. I need something that works in full shade, is low maintenance and the roots won't disturb the concrete patio. I live in Miami.

The soils depth and width is just about enough for annuals and perennials but not for shrubs or tropical plants which tend to have thick roots. I'd plant caladium, coleus, hosta, lenten rose, impatiens, lobelia, and pansies. You may be able to find dwarf gingers (Alpinia zerumbet 'Variegata Dwarf'), as well. Enjoy!
