| A friend of mine grew peppers and tomatoes close together and when the fruit came out it was the shape of a pepper, but the inside smelled, tasted and looked like a tomato. Is that common? Why did that happen? |
| Well, peppers and tomatoes can't "cross" so the proximity of the plants did not cause the odd fruit. While I can't tell you exactly what caused it, I can think of two possibilities. Pollination difficulties such as cool nights or rain can cause occasional misshapen fruit. If all of the fruit were consistently pepper-shaped, then your friend must have planted a specialty variety of tomato. There are many types of tomato seed available these days and some of the imported and heirloom varieties are quite different from the normal "tomato" we often thing of. Enjoy! |
