I planted my Magnolia tree a year ago. The leaves are turning dark brown around the edges and they are falling off.

When the margins of the leaves turn dark brown it usually indicates salt burn. This most often occurs when plants are over fertilized but could also happen when trees are not actually fertilized but are in close proximity to lawns or flower beds that are fed often. You can try to leach the excess salts out of the soil by flooding the soil each time you water your magnolia.
