What you have now is anerobic decomposition and it really does smell! The best way to remedy the situation is to incorporate fresh air. Use a garden fork to turn the pile - a couple of times a day - until the excess water evaporates. Or, rake the compost out of the bin or pile and spread it out on the ground or on plastic tarps for a day or two. The sunshine will dry it out and the odor will dissapate. You can then pile it back up to finish decomposing and turning into useable compost.
