African violets grow in a rosette from the crown of the plant and when you get tight new growth crowns it can indicate lack of sufficient light or overfertilization. There's nothing you can do to repair the crown but you can propagate your African violet through leaf cuttings and start a healthy new plant with a normal looking crown.
