I would like to plant the "Minnow" Daffodil in a semi-shaded area under some large spruce trees. In the spring of this year I planted aegopodium as a ground cover. I have many blank areas that I know will eventually be taken up by the goutweed. I would like to plant the daffodils in the blank spots. My question is: Will the daffodils come up before the aegopodium? Will the goutweed crowd out the daffodils? Bottom line, I guess, will they co-exist? |
Minnow is a lovely little daffodil. There are actually several possible concerns about your plan. Daffodils really do best planted in full sun, so it may be a bit shady in your proposed location. The spruce trees may also "outcompete" the bulbs for water and nutrients during the times the bulbs are actively growing. While the aegopodium is an extremely aggressive groundcover and is possibly an acceptable choice for that difficult location, it too will rob the bulbs of water and nutrients and possible smother the ripening foliage. Bottom line, you may well find that the bulbs decline rather rapidly, rather than perennialize the way one might hope. |
