Most insecticides are specific to the pest. For instance, soft-bodied insects like aphids can be eliminated with applications of Insecticidal Soap. However, soap sprays are not effective against most beetles, because they have a hard shell. So, to control insects, you need to identify the pest, and then choose the least-toxic way of eliminating it. If you need help, take one of the insects to your local extension office for positive identification, and ask for advice from the horticulture staff. Contact Cornell University in Ithaca, (607) 255-2237 for the address of the office nearest you.
