I was told used coffee grounds are good to keep away snails. Is this true?

The theory is that snails and slugs won't want to travel over the coffee grounds because they will stick to their slimy undersides and cause discomfort. I've never found this to be true, though. In fact, snails don't mind crawling (sliding??) through pure sand so I don't think coffee grounds will be much of a deterrent. I think the best control is the iron based bait called Sluggo. It is harmless to people, pets and wildlife and anything not consumed by the snails will break down into simple iron and be absorbed into the soil.
