I plan to aerate my lawn, then spread compost. My friend tells me to use a soil activator instead. Can you advise on which is better?

I'd vote for spreading compost after aerating a lawn. Soil activators contain natural enzymes and microbes - the same things you'll find in compost. The benefit of the compost is that it is also organic matter which will move down into the holes left by the aerator and help loosen the soil, help hold moisture, add nutrients, and give the roots a nice healthy place to grow.
