trees that will thrive in this region - Knowledgebase Question

I plan on planting three trees in my front yard. I have 8 mock orange bushes in my front yard which is desert landscaped.
What type of trees would survive the extreme heat and winter cold in this region. It would be appreciated if you could include images of these trees also.
I prefer trees that are colorful, slow in growth, and don't grow to be very tall at maturity.
Thank You.

Some smaller but colorful trees for your region include Orchid tree (Bauhinia variegata), ornamental purple leaf plum, and Texas Mountain Laurel (Sophora secundiflora). I can't send you photos but you can look them up on the internet. All are rather small trees (as far as trees go) and all flower each year.
