My Cherry tree was damaged on one side and now doesn't produce branches on that side. Any way of encouraging it to start producing branches?

You didn't explain what damaged the tree so I'm not sure whether or not it is capable of growing branches on that side. If it was burned or the bark scraped or pulled off, the latent growth buds will no longer be there and no new branches will grow on that side. Sometimes an overall pruning will prompt new growth. Why not try trimming everything back by 4-6"? New growth should develop within a few weeks. If buds do not appear on the bare side of the tree, it may not be able to perform well and might need to be removed and replaced with a healthy specimen.
