Butterfly bushes can grow quite large and I'd be afraid to plant one so close to the septic tank. Instead, why not plant some shallow rooted annuals and perennials that attract butterflies? These will not pose a problem to the leach lines or septic tank. Some to consider include Anaphalis (Pearly Everlasting), Aquilegia (Columbine), Asclepias (Milkweed), Fall Aster (Michaelmas Daisy), Caryopteris (Bluebeard), Coreopsis, Echinacea (Purple Coneflower), Echinops (Globe Thistle), 2 B
Heuchera (red-flowered Coral-bells), Liatris (Blazing Star), Physostegia (Obedient Plant), Scabiosa (Pincushion flower), Ageratum, Cleome, Cosmos, Petunia, Salvia and Verbena. Best wishes with your garden!
