We have purchased an older home (1963) and have lovely dogwoods. Should I fertilize the trees?

Unless growth is poor or leaf color is pale, your dogwoods probably won't need to be fed. The roots can get the nutrients they need from the soil, especially if there is a layer of mulch over the soil beneath the trees. Enjoy your old/new landscape!
