Most lawn fertilizers are fast acting so use a product such as Scotts Turfbuilder or Vigoro. You can address the soil problem by aerating your lawn and spreading compost or sand over the lawn to help with drainage. Either will work its way into the holes left by the aerator to help loosen the soil and facilitate good drainage. Lawns respond well to regular feeding, mowing and watering. Water deeply once or twice a week, depending upon weather, mow often enough that you're only taking off one third of the grass blades with each mowing, and feed your lawn in April, June, September and late November with a 3-1-2 ratio of NPK. Good care will result in a thick, lush lawn. Best wishes with your lawn!
