I would like to trim a butterfly bush and would like to know when the best time is to do the trimming

It's not too late to prune your butterfly bush. Late winter or early spring is best. You can either reduce the overall size by pruning it back to a more manageable size, or you can cut it down to almost ground level. Either way, your butterfly bush will respond with new growth when the weather warms. Enjoy!
