Deck - Knowledgebase Question

I live in the southern part of Virginia and want to plant some things in containers on my covered deck. The deck does not get much sun due to the roof over it, but it gets extremely hot in the summer months due to the humidity. I would like to put something in containers that would last through the winter months and come back every year. Help. Thanks.
