What can I do to prevent squirrels from eating newly planted bulbs?

Squirrels will mainly dig just to see what you planted. If they happen to find a daffodil bulb, they'll quit exploring. But if they find a tulip, they'll probably continue digging. Some gardeners have success by dipping the bulbs into a deterrent such as Ropel before planting. I think I'd just stretch some chicken wire or hardware cloth or even some permeable weed control cloth over the bed. You can remove it in late winter or early spring, after the ground has compacted and before the bulbs begin to sprout.
