Pink and red hydrangeas often turn blue or purple in acid soils. Blue hydrangeas can turn pink in alkaline soils. Your plants can be kept pink by liming the soil or applying superphosphate fertilizer. It can take a while for the lime or superphosphate to work so apply it now, in early spring. In general, 4 ounces of lime around the base of your hydrangea plant can change the color back to pink, depending upon how acidic your soil is to begin with. You can test your soil with a home pH test kit. The target is about 6.5 on the pH scale. Enjoy!
