Do all fruit trees have to have more than one of the same type of tree to produce fruit? If so, it there a female/male and how do I know if I am buying the right one?

Citrus, avocado, and banana won't need a companion for fruit set, but most other fruit trees will. You only need to pair each type of fruit tree with one that blooms at the same time. Most plant tags will suggest the names of second trees for pollination so check the tags.
