I usually replace my soil in my outdoor planters every year. Is that necessary? I covered them this winter to try to reserve the nutrients in the soil. I thought about adding miracle grow or something.

You can reuse your potting soil year after year. I like to dump (or dig) it out and mix in a little bit of new potting soil just to help fluff it up and renew it. This also gives me an opportunity to remove old roots and stems from the soil and to check to make sure insects and ants aren't trying to nest in the bottoms of the planters.
