Consider growing the following:

Carolina Allspice (Calycanthus floridus); the leaves are aromatic when bruised. Also commonly called sweet shrub and strawberry bush in reference to the fragrant blooms which have been described as combining hints of pineapple, strawberry and banana.

Cistena Plum Shrub (Prunus x Cistena); has been a long standing favorite of flowering plum shrubs. Cistena Plum is as well known for its fragrant pinkish flowers which pop out in the early to mid spring as it is for the striking purple to red leaves.

Boxwood Winter Gem (Buxus microphylla Winter Gem), considered the classic evergreen hedge or shrub plant in the 4 - 6 foot hedge range.

Barberry Royal Burgundy (Berberis thunbergii Royal Burgundy) has beautiful burgundy leaves.

Hope one of these suggestions is just right for your landscape.
