can i plant ground cover around perennials? or will it take over?

Groundcovers are sometimes well behaved but often they overtake an area due to their creeping, trailing nature. I think it depends upon the groundcover. Creeping thyme, for instances, grows into a low mat but it is easily controlled - just pull it out and the roots come out, too. Ajuga or vinca isn't as easy to control and will overtake an area in a short time even if you pull it out - some roots always remain and the plants will regrow. Hope this answers your question!
