We're starting a garden for the first time and want to put up a cheap wire fence to keep out pests, but we have everything ranging from chipmunks to deer. What height fencing and size aperture should we be looking at? Will fencing keep out chipmunks or will they just climb it? Thanks!

Deer are probably the most difficult to keep out of a garden. You can try the repellants Ropel and Deer Away (they taste nasty) or you may have to result in erecting a 10' fence all around your garden. If you do this you can place hardware cloth around the bottom 3' to keep out rabbits. Chipmonks will climb, though, so the hardware cloth will need to go up and over the top of the fence so that your garden is completely enclosed. There's really no easy answer to the problem. You might contact your local extension office - they may have some handy hints. The offices are listed by county at the following website: http://www.ext.colostate.edu/c...
