Bare spots can be caused by dog urine or compacted soils. Either can be fixed. Just loosen the soil, add some compost and then transfer some sprigs or plugs from the healthy part of your lawn. The compost will help correct the soil compaction and will also help to neutralize the urea from dog urine. Best wishes with your lawn.
