I think you'll have better results if you work some compost or other organic matter into the bare areas and then reseed. Compost will help the soil retain moisture and nutrients which will help the new grass to root well and remain healthy. You can broadcast a starter fertilizer (it is actually sold as "starter" fertilizer) over the entire lawn and then overseed. Best wishes with your lawn.
